Hampshire Chess Individual Championship 1938

Three preliminary sections with the top two players progressing to the final was the format again. WA Hooper won his first and only title ahead of FJH Elwell.

The preliminary sections had the following players:

Section I

  • WJ Fry
  • FJH Elwell
  • HHR Northover
  • HA Way

Section II

  • AS Dance
  • RS Lockwood
  • SL Russell
  • EF Briscoe
  • F Spedan Lewis

Section III

  • WA Hooper
  • AF Morrell
  • H Grover
  • FL Taylor
  • FW Webster

There were less details in the Hampshire Advertiser than in previous years. I have made an attempt to piece together the preliminaries. Sections I and II had some results from the Hampshire Advertiser, but none were there for section III.

For a list of the winners of the Hampshire Individual Championship and links to any articles I have written the table on the Hampshire Individual Championship is the best place to look. In addition, the table on the Hampshire Tournaments will detail these and any other tournament articles I have completed. Both of these are available from the menu at the top of the site as well.

Section I

In section I there were only four players and WJ Fry and FJH Elwell progressed with Fry winning all his games and Elwell scoring 50%.

Section II

In section II AS Dance scored three points and RS Lockwood and SL Russell two and a half from their four games. There are no details of tie-break, but an assumption that Russell won a play-off between the two is consistent with previous years, as he is detailed in the final and Lockwood is not.

Worth noting that F Spedan Lewis is John Spedan Lewis who formed the John Lewis Partnership. He was also the President of the Hampshire Chess Association from 1936 until his death in 1963 (I need to double check this, but he certainly was in 1959). He was not as good as Chess player as Businessman and failed to score any points in the prelim and I think this was the only time he entered the Championship. He had a bit more success playing for the County Team, where he won 4 of the 11 games he played on board 14 to 20. He was not a fan of the draw, as the other 7 games were losses.

Section III

In section III WA Hooper and AF Morrell both scored three points in their path to the final. Full round by round was not possible for this section.

Final

Unfortunately the final does not have the individual results, just the order the players finished in. WA Hooper was successful winning his one and only title ahead of the experienced FJH Elwell.
