The same structure as 1935 with three preliminary sections of five players and the top two in each section meeting in the final.
F.J.H.Elwell won his fourth title just ahead of Wilf Pratten.

Hampshire Chess Individual Championship 1936

In 1936 there were three preliminary sections of five players where the top two players progressed to the final where an all play all was undertaken.

In section I H.A.Way scored three points whilst Wilf Pratten and 1933 champion W.F.Fry managed two and a half points. In a play off between these two Wilf Pratten was successful and qualified for the final.

In section II 1935 champion S.L.Russell won all his games, whilst A.B.Coe scored 2 and a half points.

In section III three time champion F.J.H.Elwell also won all his games and H.Grover won all his games with the exception of his one against Elwell.

In the final Elwell and Pratten both scored 4 points, with Wilf winning their individual game. However in the play off between the two Elwell proved successful with two points from the three games. The fourth title for F.J.H.Elwell and a close miss for Wilf Pratten who was British Chess Boys (under 18) in 1924 and 1925.
