Hampshire Chess Individual Championship 1936

The same structure as 1935 with three preliminary sections of five players and the top two in each section meeting in the final.
FJH Elwell won his fourth title just ahead of Wilf Pratten.

The preliminary sections had the following players:

Section I

  • HA Way
  • WH Pratten
  • WJ Fry
  • HD Lloyd
  • HL Parsons

Section II

  • SL Russell
  • AB Coe
  • AS Dance
  • WJ Turner
  • EF Briscoe

Section III

  • FJH Elwell
  • H Grover
  • JW Webster
  • LS Ward
  • SB Barker

As per previous years the Hampshire Chess Archives only had the preliminary places and points scored. But using the Hampshire Advertiser articles I think I have calculated the correct individual scores.

For a list of the winners of the Hampshire Individual Championship and links to any articles I have written the table on the Hampshire Individual Championship is the best place to look. In addition, the table on the Hampshire Tournaments will detail these and any other tournament articles I have completed. Both of these are available from the menu at the top of the site as well.

Section I

In section I HA Way scored three points whilst Wilf Pratten and 1933 champion WJ Fry managed two and a half points. In a play off between these two Wilf Pratten was successful and qualified for the final. The results from the Hampshire Advertiser mentioned that WJ Fry had beaten Pratten but as Pratten had lost to HA Way he could not have scored two and a half points. For this reason I think this was probably the other way round and I have calculated the table accordingly.

In section II 1935 champion SL Russell won all his games, whilst AB Coe scored two and a half points. Both these players moved onto the final.

Final

In the final Elwell and Pratten both scored 4 points, with Wilf winning their individual game. However in the play off between the two Elwell proved successful with two points from the three games. The fourth title for FJ H Elwell and a close miss for Wilf Pratten who was British Chess Boys (under 18) in 1924 and 1925.

Wilf was a founding member of Fareham Chess Club and also went on to form the Portsmouth Chess Club in 1947. https://farehamchessclub.co.uk/club-history/

Two of the three playoff games were included in the game compilation from Roger Paige and Arthur Brameld and are below, Wilf won the first game but lost the remaining two.

This was a month after the first game, so is likely the third game of the playoff?
