Hampshire Chess Individual Championship 1933

Another tweak to the competition in 1933 saw two sections of six players with the top two players moving to the final. There was a much larger percentage of Southampton and Portsmouth players in this years championship.

The preliminary sections had the following players:

Section I

  • Revd AR Witt
  • FL Taylor
  • KD Lloyd
  • JS West
  • CF Chapman
  • HA Way

Section II

  • WJ Fry
  • GT Lloyd
  • FJH Elwell
  • H Grover
  • CT Bennett
  • AB Coe

For a list of the winners of the Hampshire Individual Championship and links to any articles I have written the table on the Hampshire Individual Championship is the best place to look. In addition, the table on the Hampshire Tournaments will detail these and any other tournament articles I have completed. Both of these are available from the menu at the top of the site as well.

Preliminaries

Unfortunately there was not a record of the individual results in the Hampshire Chess Archives. I have located a couple of results from the Hampshire Advertiser. In section I Bournemouth’s Rev AR Witt lost to Portsmouth’s HA Way and JS West. Both these two Portsmouth players progressed to the final from section I.

Whilst in Section II Southampton’s H Grover managed four wins in consecutive days which qualified him to the final. Bournemouth’s CT Bennett drew with Andover’s GT Lloyd, GT Lloyd lost to Southampton’s WJ Fry and Southampton’s FJH Elwell beat fellow Southampton player AB Coe.

H Grover was joined in the final by Southampton’s WJ Fry.

Final

With current champion FJH Elwell not progressing from the preliminaries this meant there would be a new champion. The final had two players from Southampton and Portsmouth Chess clubs, proving the dominance of these two clubs in Hampshire.

Southampton’s WJ Fry who would go on to win again in 1939 and 1951 won his three games winning his first championship. In second place was Portsmouth player HA Way. Third and fourth place was shared by Portsmouth’s JS West and Southampton’s H Grover.
