Hampshire Chess Individual Championship 1931
The 2nd Hampshire Individual Championship was held in 1931.
Clubs again played preliminary tournaments and the winners were paired as below:-
I presume F.J.H.Elwell entered as champion, rather than as Southampton Chess Club? G.Stuart 2021.
In 1931 there were 9 clubs who held preliminary tournaments and I am presuming the champion from 1930 F.J.H.Elwell was allowed to defend his title? This meant in total there were 10 players and the tournament was held over 4 rounds rather than 3 in 1930. Four players had a bye in the first round to get to the desired number to play down to the final.
As F.J.H.Elwell won the title 5 times I would say him losing in the 2nd round to Portsmouth's K.D.Lloyd was an upset. K.D.Lloyd lost in the semi-final to the eventual winner, Bournemouth's C.T.Bennett. Bournemouth was part of Hampshire until 1974 so you will see a number of Bournemouth players in the Hampshire Championship and the Hampshire League until this time.
