Hampshire Individual Chess Championship 2018

The Hampshire Individual Championship has been held since 1930 although there have been years with no competition and the structure has changed from the first one which had eight players to the present Congress which includes the Individual Championship.

The Congress was split into three sections, the Open (including Hampshire Individual Championship), Major (under 160) and Minor (under 125). The winners of the relevant Silver Rook, Peter Marshall Cup and Parsons Cup have to be Hampshire players though. The Major and Minor tournaments will be covered in a separate post.

The tournament was played at the Lysses House Hotel in Fareham over six rounds, one on Friday, three on Saturday and two on Sunday. Half point byes were allowed for players in the first five rounds.

Open – Round 1

Sixteen players entered the Open section, with two deciding to take a first-round bye. All seven games played ended with a decisive result, with only one going against grade with Philip Stimpson beating Peter Anderson. Two players took a first-round bye.

Open – Round 2

Three players moved onto two points and Philip Stimpson continued to win against 25 higher graded opponents, this time beating Jaimie Wilson. Mike Waddington and David Pye were the other two players who were on 100%.

Roger Marsh held Matt Chapman to a draw, which left Matt half a point behind the three leaders.

Open – Round 3

The top four boards were drawn which meant there was not too much change at the top. On the bottom four boards the players with the White pieces proved dominant all winning.

This meant Waddington, Pye and Simpson remained at the top with two and a half points from three games, whilst Chapman, Wilson and Clancy were half a point behind on two points.

Although we tend to look at the top of table, it is well worth looking at the games played lower down. Sherif Gonem played a very nice combination against Robin Williams to win his game.

Open – Round 4

Saturday evening, when a lot of players know that three games in one day is tough and take a bye. Six players took this option, leaving five games in play. Four of these proved decisive. Mike Waddington took the sole lead by beating Philip Stimpson. Matt Chapman beat Jamie Wilson and joined David Pye who took a bye on three points just behind Mike.

Winning with Black in under twenty moves when playing the French Defence is challenging, but a very well-played game by Mike Waddington where White did not seem to go wrong in the opening but slipped into a worse position was a game where this happened.

Open – Round 5

All changed in round five as the leader Mike Waddington lost to Matt Chapman. He was joined on four points by David Pye who beat Philip Stimpson. Mike Waddington and David Fowler who beat Martin Clancy were just half a point behind leaving all to play for in the final round.

Open – Round 6

Matt Chapman continued his winning ways, coming out on top against David Pye in the game given below. Mike Waddington won against David Fowler and was in sole second place. Matt won the Open and was also Hampshire Individual Champion. The under-175 Grading Prize was won by Paul Northcott (Emsworth).
